The return of the Arai Quantum name brings a motorcycle helmet that is equally suitable for hot, sporty blasts down twisty roads as it is for long periods in the saddle when all-season touring.
Arai have built a new helmet that features the much-loved “Quantum fit” but also incorporates the superior technology of the MotoGP-tested RX-7 GP (launched in December 2008). The result is a sports-touring helmet that has been developed to offer new standards in comfort and safety.
Construction
As with every Arai, the stiff and strong outer shell forms an integral and very important part of the total construction. For the Quantum, the tried and trusted ’Super cLc’ (Super Complex Laminate Construction) system was chosen.
The hand-built shell consists of three layers; two layers of Super Fibre with a middle layer of an exclusive, patented Arai fibre. Further increasing outer shell strength is the Arai ‘’Hyper Ridge’’ construction at the bottom band of the helmet.
Providing riders with the safest possible helmet is paramount to Arai, which is why, unlike other brands, each and every helmet undergoes rigorous in-house safety and penetration tests similar to that of the Snell Foundation.
Another development that designates directly from the RX-7 GP is a visor that offers the widest field of view in the industry, which includes a further 5 mm each side over previous Arai helmets. This increased peripheral vision improves safety, especially on crossings and when overtaking, while sports riders will value the ability to see deeper into and out of bends.
The extra wide SAI visor comes complete with mounting pins for the Pinlock inlay visor that is provided, but not fitted, with every Quantum helmet. The Pinlock anti-mist inlay visor effectively prevents fogging and misting on the inside of the visor, enhancing safety and comfort. Together with the defog position on the visor lock, fogging of the visor is completely minimalized.
Ultimate comfort
The Quantum’s inner shell foam lining is made of EPS (expanded polystyrene), but what makes it remarkable is the fact that three (sizes XS –L) to five (sizes XL - XXL) different densities are combined in one integrated shell. This has many safety benefits over the method used by many other brands where separate parts with different densities are assembled together.
Much attention has been paid for the Quantum to provide a fit unrivalled in its comfort. This is important for every helmet, but especially for a touring helmet where all day long comfort is paramount. The lining material is an improved, two-tone Dry-Cool that always feels cool and dry to the skin, while dispersing moisture and perspiration efficiently into the Quantum ventilation system.
The interior can easily be removed and is washable, making it easier to keep the helmet fresh. All the interior padding is replaceable and available in different thicknesses, allowing an Arai Five Star dealer to create the perfect personal fit.
An extra safety feature is the Emergency Release cheek pads that can be removed in a matter of seconds by pulling the orange tabs. This makes it much easier to remove the helmet, reducing additional injury to the neck and head in case of an accident.
Optimized ventilation
Next to a perfect fit, an efficient ventilation system contributes significantly to the total comfort experience of a helmet. Though the familiar Arai brow vents are present, guiding fresh air to the temple and forehead area, a complete new ventilation system has been developed for the Quantum.
At the front fresh air enters the helmet through the improved three position chin vent. Fresh, cool air is guided to the inside of the visor or straight into the chin piece. An integrated filter prevents the entry of insects or road dirt.
On top of the helmet two large TDF3 ducts catch the cooling wind, but they can be closed, just like all vents on the Quantum, when the weather cools down. Larger push buttons are used on all ventilation devices, making them easier to use even with gloves on.
Three different exhaust vents are used on the Quantum to expel moist and warm air from the interior as quickly and efficiently as possible. On the back there is the large DDL4 one-piece duct, with a big, easy to use three position switch button. New IQ side ducts draw hot air out of the lower part of the helmet while even the neck roll is provided with an integrated exhaust vent, made of soft material to enhance the comfort.
Colours and designs
The new Quantum is available in white or black along with a wide range of exciting new designs penned by Arai’s master designer, Aldo Drudi. For those wanting a bolder helmet, the ‘Flag Series’ with the UK or Italian flag, is an emotive option, while the ‘DNA’ or the very novel ‘Oriental’ design, will surely attract attention.
Special features
The new Quantum is fully loaded with special features such as the retractable chin spoiler that offers improved aerodynamic properties at high speeds while simultaneously enhancing comfort. Another first for Arai is the one-piece trim rubber that finishes the bottom of the helmet. This new rubber eliminates the joint, offering a more smooth and streamlined appearance.
On the inside the integrated breath deflector, identical to the one used in the RX-7 GP, combines several duties; first it prevents the hot, moist air from the nose and mouth causing misting of the visor, by guiding the air downwards. Then it functions as a guide for the fresh air from the chin vent guiding it to the inside of the visor and to the mouth area of the wearer.
The new SAI visor can be removed in a matter of seconds thanks to the LRS (Lever Release System) system. No tools are needed, perfect for easy cleaning of the visor or changing it to suit the conditions

Avon’s new Storm 2 Ultra (front and rear)
Avon Tyres will release a successor to its popular Storm ST family of sports-touring tyres at this year’s International Motorcycle and Scooter show at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, later this week. The new Storm 2 Ultra builds on the performance of the Storm ST and, says Avon, improves upon it in a number of areas. Developed from the award-winning Storm ST tyre, the company says the new Storm 2 Ultra offers more mileage and improved grip in all weathers and road conditions.
The multi-compound Super Rich Silica (SRS) treads give rear tyres an extra 12 per cent mileage over the original Storm ST. Meanwhile changes incorporated in the zero-degree belting system, and modifications to the dynamic stresses within the carcass itself have increased mechanical grip. This allows for improved traction in both wet and dry conditions, while also enhancing the handling and overall ride comfort.
The current Storm ST tyre has recently won praise from readers of both Motor Cycle News and RiDE magazine for both performance and cost effectiveness. Avon Tyres’ Storm 2 Ultra can be found at the Central Wheel stand, located in Hall 2, 2JO5.
The new Storm 2 Ultra comes in the following sizes: Fronts AV 55s; 110/70ZR17, 110/80ZR18, 120/60ZR17, 120/70ZR17, 120/70ZR18 and 130/70ZR17 fronts. Rear AV56s include 150/70ZR17, 150/70ZR18, 160/60ZR17, 160/70ZR17, 160/60ZR18, 170/60ZR17, 180/55ZR17, 190/50ZR17 and 200/50ZR17. J.D. Power: Arai ranks highest in customer satisfaction!
Tuesday, 9 June 2009
incredible but true: for the 11 th consecutive year Arai has scored first place in the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction StudySM.
The study measures the overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet in three key factors: ventilation, face shield, and design and styling; which consist of 11 attributes: quietness; ventilation/air flow; de-fogging; face shield ability to keep wind out; face shield ability to resist scratching; ease of replacing face shield; scratch resistance of shell; color/graphic design; weight; ease of fastening the strap; and fit and comfort.
The official J.D. Power press release states:
With a score of 830 on a 1,000-point scale, Arai ranks highest and performs particularly well in the ventilation and design and styling factors. .
“Arai continues to improve in the areas critical to customer satisfaction, which has further differentiated it from other manufacturers,” said Tim Fox, research manager of the powersports practice at J.D. Power and Associates. “Arai’s focus on fit and comfort—the most important consideration when purchasing a motorcycle helmet—and its ability to cater to different types of riders have given the manufacturer a consistent edge in satisfying customers.”
Overall satisfaction with motorcycle helmets has increased to an average of 766 in 2009—up 5 points from 2008—the highest level since the study’s inception in 1999.
The study finds that while the percentage of helmet owners who conducted research online before buying has remained relatively steady from 2008 at 36 percent, the proportion of helmet owners who purchased their helmet online has increased—up to 17 percent in 2009 from 14 percent in 2008. Additionally, those who purchased more expensive helmets ($200 or more) are more likely to both research and purchase their helmet online. More than one-half of these helmet owners researched online prior to their purchase, and 22 percent of them made their purchase online.
The 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 4,600 purchasers of new 2008 model-year motorcycles who provided information about their most recent helmet purchase experience and helmet use. The study was fielded in September and October 2008.

Friday, 3 April 2009
Newsflash #16 – 30th March 2009
FINAL HAGA DESIGN REVEALED!
It has taken some time, but the definite Haga design has finally been revealed. Experts and keen followers of the Word Superbike races will immediately notice that it has a familiar look and they are right: with this design Noriyuki Haga won this years opening WSB round Phillip Island on his very first outing on the Ducati!
The new RX-7 GP design is based on the previous one, but the big difference is the simple yet clever change of the colour scheme: red flames are now black, and black background is now colored red. The result is a design that is undeniable more powerful with a heavier accent on the flames adding a more dynamic look.
Good news for those preferring the former Haga design: it is available in both red and black color schemes on the Chaser.
The new RX-7 GP Haga Replica will be Available in NZ around Late July

Avon VP2 - Sport AV59 / AV60 - Supersport AV59 / AV60 - Xtreme AV61 / AV62
Avon Tyres, a top quality brand of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, introduces its exciting new range of sports motorcycle tyres, the VP2.
With Avon’s enhanced construction methods and its debut use of multi-compound rubber construction, VP2 looks certain to continue the successes of the acclaimed Viper range.
To cater to the demands of today’s multi-discipline riders and the vast array of performance machines available, both new and used, VP2 is offered in three different types; Sport, Supersport and Xtreme, all in a variety of popular fitments.
Though individually characterised by their own performance criteria and capabilities, the VP2 family shares the same key underlying aims; to allow riders to get exactly what they want from their machines.
Aside from many technical advances, VP2 also benefits heavily from Avon’s most rigorous motorcycle tyre testing programme to date.
In order to stay one step ahead of the relentless pace at which modern motorcycles progress, and to meet the demanding criteria for the new range, the dedicated development team applied tens of thousands of miles of testing on road and track in all conditions, as well as applying meticulous laboratory research.
From high speed stability, enhanced durability and dependable high levels of grip on the road right through to the precise rider feedback, quick steering and consistency needed for the race track - VP2 delivers.
Technologies
Though proudly boasting innovations, many of the features that collectively helped to make the outgoing Viper range such a trusted and capable tyre have been enhanced to new lengths with VP2.
Underneath VP2’s tread is Avon’s most advanced belt system yet - Hybrid Belt, which consists of strands of aramid and steel or steel of differing tensions wound together around the tyre to form a unique belt system. The ultra strong aramid fibres produce exceptional high speed stability which is complimented by the flexibility and natural spring properties of steel that translates into exceptional mechanical grip.
VP2 Sport features Avon’s first use of multiple compound construction on a motorcycle tyre.
With Sport aimed at the all-year round sports rider, the merits of using a multi-compound construction allows this tyre to excel at dealing with a huge variety of machines, ridden in many disciplines and through wet and dry conditions.
This performance was achieved by Avon’s new TE (Tri-compound Extrusion) construction system that produces a durable medium compound in the centre of the tyre for improved mileage returns. The seldom used edge of the tyre receives a soft compound to deliver high levels of grip, even from cold, when suddenly required from higher lean angles.
The third compound comes courtesy of a very soft, low hysteresis compound across the entire base of the tread. Under such incredible forces from modern performance machines, this helps to improve the bond between the other two compounds and the carcass.
All of the VP2 range benefits from Avon’s A-VBD (Advanced-Variable Belt Density); a construction technique, specifically for rear tyres, that builds in a multi-compound characteristic into the rubber compound.
A-VBD works by the frequency in which the jointless Hybrid Belt is wrapped around the tyres’ circumference. For stability and durability, the cables are wound closely in the centre but are then specifically spaced out toward the tyres’ shoulder to build in a certain degree of flex, giving a larger contract patch at higher angles of lean and consequently a softer feel.
Despite the host of technical improvements made with VP2, the soul of the original Viper remains within the new range.
Forces transmitted to the surface of the tyre have changed very little during that time. Avon’s development team rigorously carried out tests with new tread designs forVP2, but it was proven that the original aggressive surface pattern utilised by Viper was unsurpassed; producing even tyre wear, aiding fast warm-up and providing excellent water displacement, especially onVP2 Sport and Supersport.
VP2 Sport - For everyday performance road riding
The everyday road riders’ high performance tyre. VP2 Sport features Avon’s first multi-compound construction with the addition of high amounts of silica to give increased grip - in wet and dry conditions.
Avon’s TE (Tri-compound Extrusion) construction system produces a durable medium compound in the centre of the tyre for improved mileage returns. The benefits of Avon’s A-VBD (Advanced Variable Belt Density) system, specifically for rear tyres, is then doubled as VP2 Sport also receives a separate soft compound on the edge of the tyre to deliver high levels of grip, even from cold, when suddenly required from higher lean angles.
The third compound comes courtesy of a very soft, low hysteresis compound across the entire base of the tread. Under such incredible forces from modern performance machines, this helps to improve the bond between the other two compounds and the carcass.
Avon’s Hybrid Belt system, combined with other advanced construction features, creates an intelligent tyre with a contact patch that grows with increased lean angle and offers precise handling characteristics and consistent stability throughout the tyre’s life.
Superb performance on the road – in wet and dry conditions
Multiple compound tread
Precise handling characteristics
Carcass designed for excellent stability
Stable at speed - throughout the tyre’s life
Can also be used for track days
VP2 Supersport – Equally at home on the track and on the road
Visually identical to VP2 Sport and sharing many of the same technical features, Supersport advances by giving riders the ability to push to the next performance level to get the very best from supersport machinery.
Designed to work better with harder use, VP2 Supersport has an increased focus on maximum grip. The need for dual compound technologies is negated by utilising a race derived soft compound throughout the tyre.
Like the entire VP2 range, Supersport utilises Avon’s ES System (Enhanced Stability System) so that the stresses absorbed by the carcass, sidewall and tread pattern are distributed evenly, reducing localised flexing within the tyre’s structure. The result is an increase in grip and stability while at the same time reducing tread wear.
With LPE (Lifetime Profile Engineering) and ATAC-TA Tread Profile (Advanced Tread Arc Combination – Tri Arc), VP2 Supersport will work harder for longer as the tread profile is varied across the tyre for enhanced handling and stability, even at increased lean angles, along with consistent handling and stability for the full life of the tyre.
Superb performance on the road
Ideal for track work
Carcass designed for stability and rider feedback
Race type compound formula for high levels of grip
Consistently stable
VP2 Xtreme – Pure performance road legal track tyre
Developed exclusively on race tracks, VP2 Xtreme is uncompromising in its pursuit of ultimate dry grip and optimum high speed performance for riders who enjoy exploiting the very best from supersport machines regularly on track.
VP2 Xtreme utilises a super sticky race compound with a special high molecular weight polymer designed to reach its operating temperature fast, ideal for track days.
Avon’s Hybrid Belt, featuring the use of steel and aramid strands in a tyres’ construction, has vastly improved all important rider feel and, consequently, lap times.
The focus on dry use allows VP2 Xtreme to feature a surface pattern with fewer grooves that are further apart and concentrated in the centre ‘third’ of the tyre. This minimal tread also enhances grip as more rubber is in constant contact with the track.
Without a focus on sprint racing, Avon’s designers were able to implement enhanced durability into Xtreme; a rarity for a tyre with such high performance parameters and allowing riders to go faster for longer.
Recommended for track day use
Super-sticky compound for optimum dry use performance
Reaches optimum working temperatures quickly
Large footprint at extreme lean angles
Increased Stability at high speed and under hard braking
Track tuned profiles provide composed turning characteristics.

Avon Cobra – Specific Goldwing Fitment For New Touring & Custom Tyre
Avon Tyres, a top quality brand of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, has introduced a Honda Goldwing GL1800 specific fitment of their new touring and custom tyre - Cobra.
In order to replace the extremely popular Venom-R radial tyre, Avon listened long and hard to what their cruiser, custom and touring customers demanded; handling, durability and aesthetics were high on their list of priorities.
Avon’s development team also wanted to improve manoeuvrability at both high and low speeds, all whilst maintaining the brand’s legendary reputation for stability and high mileage.
Complete with a unique snakeskin sidewall design, the new Cobra range successfully achieved its goals on sizes for a wide range of machines before the attention was turned to a specific fitment for Honda’s GL1800 Goldwing.
As a unique model itself, development for a Goldwing tyre had to be treated differently, largely due to the different carrying loads the bike can be subjected to.
Extensive testing over thousands of miles took place across Europe and America and the result is a tyre that can more than cope with such stresses whilst delivering sport performance throughout the tyre’s life.
In order to achieve their goal, advanced manufacturing techniques first used in Avon’s successful sporty Viper range have been adapted and applied to Cobra giving a characteristic once reserved only for agile race-bred bikes, all without disrupting all-important stability.
To improve handling in the wider Cobra sizes, they are manufactured using A-VBD (Advanced-Variable Density Belt). This construction technology utilises a jointless belt of ultra-strong material. Above the carcass, these strands are wound closely together at the tyre’s centre for increased stability and wear resistance. Towards the tyre’s edges the fibres are then progressively spaced out to allow the tyre to take on a multi-compound effect as the tyre leans.
With a fang mark and coiling indentation appearance, Cobra’s snake-like tread pattern looks commanding. But this aggressive pattern is not just for show. Developed by Avon, Force Following Grooves (FFG) follow the exact direction of forces that are transferred through the tyre. These channels in the tyre’s surface significantly reduce irregular and advanced wear on bikes that carry heavy loads. Each Cobra rear tyre also features the distinctive snake’s head logo on the sidewall.
Ride longer. Ride harder. And know that whatever the road ahead brings, Cobra will help you defeat it.

COMMING SOON!!!!
BLAST FROM THE PAST: NEW CHASER ‘’SCHWANTZ RE-STYLE’’ IN PRODUCTION!
The original yellow and black ‘’Star’’ design of Kevin Schwantz went into the Arai history as one of the most successful designs ever. Now original designer Aldo Drudi had to meet a new challenge: to design a true successor for his own classic design. The result can be seen here and its name is ‘’Chaser Schwantz Re-style’’.
Just one look is enough to bring back memories of Kevin Schwantz in one of his many heroic battles on the screaming 500cc two stroke racers. But at the same time is a timeless, beautifully balanced design offering exactly the right amount of emotion and passion. Agreed, here you can admire images of the first painted sample, but be assured that the final result will be astonishing!
Limited numbers of this helmet will be awailalble in NZ around late July 2009
